Technical Information The Storm® All-Weather Safety Whistle is the loudest whistle on the market. It's unique patented design allows it to be heard under water, up to 50 feet, because the sounding chamber forces all water to be purged when the whistle is blown. Made in the USA. It's perfect for divers, lifeguards, and for recreation! Creates a clear, high frequency sound, with a power rating over 75% greater than other referee and safety whistles.
Test Results The Storm whistle is twice as loud as any other mouth-blown whistle in the world. Initial testing was conducted by the Hearing Conservation Programs Inc., who tested the decibel rating of various military, sports and survival whistles against the Storm whistle. These first tests were performed in a sound proof booth at a distance of 15 feet with the whistle being blown by mouth, and had a number of variables, such as the person blowing the whistle and the accuracy of the sound level devices.
The second set of tests, conducted by the Central Institute for the Deaf, were performed in open air at a distance of 15 feet, 25 feet and 50 feet. Here the whistles were attached to a constant air source which was adjusted to the normal blowing strength typically generated by the mouth. The sound the whistles made was then analyzed by computer, using a double blind technique, detailing the amplitude and signature of the sound created.
With a standard whistle, nonproductive high frequency (over 5000 hertz) and nonproductive low frequency (below 2000 hertz) sounds are created. Because of the patented harmonic chamber that is unique to the Storm whistle, these high and low frequency sounds are recycled and focused into our extremely loud single 3150 hertz frequency of double the standard amplitude.
The focused 3150 hertz frequency was generated intentionally in accordance with government recommendations that showed that the 3150 hertz tone is the most readily heard over the noise of motors, crowds, and explosions.
In all these cases, test results showed the Storm whistle as being twice as loud as the other whistles.

This is a very loud whistle, which is what I wanted. You can use it for many things, to scare people away if needed, to call people or animals. Would be great in storm weather but warning as it has a very loud and high pitch, so everyone will hear this one..

Excellent whistle for more reasons than I can list. I use it while kayaking and it has proven to be a superior communication device. Even at a distance its sound remains sharp and clear. I have no doubt that in a rescue situation the Storm Safety Whistle will be an invaluable tool. One word of warning, if you are going to sound this whistle “long and hard”, cover your ears or they will be ringing for several minutes

I purchased a number of these whistles to give to my family for Christmas. We camp and hike and want to be able to communicate with those exhuberant kids who tend to wander. This is by far the loudest whistle we've ever heard and we look forward to feeling just a little more secure at the time we may need to use them. The only problem may be convincing the younger crowd to restrain themselves to cases of extreme necessity only.

Perfect for the Boundary Waters. Used the whistle to communicate to friends on whether the rapids were safe to proceed or not. They could hear the whistle over the noise of the rapids. Definitely more effective than yelling. Also, got the lanyard. For this trip, because it was so cold and damp, I skipped the lanyard and clipped the whistle on a very small carabiner that went through my jacket zipper so it was near my mouth at all times. This whistle will be going with me on all backpacking and outdoor excursions.

Five stars! Out of desperation one day to stop my puppy's incessant barking, I grabbed the bright orange Storm Whistle and blew as hard and loud as I could. Bingo! Worked like a charm. She stopped immediately AND shot back in the house like a bullet or like she'd been shot by one. PS: No need to blow with gusto as I did the first time; that's overkill and just about burst my eardrums. I only use it now for the occasional barking, especially at dark thirty. We're in tornado alley so I use it to simply call both dogs in as needed . . .

I saw this when I was ordering another item and decided to try one (less than $5, why not?) I haven't tried it underwater, but used it in a HUGE crowd (5000 plus)at a TEA Party Rally, and then heard a tape of one of the speakers later and you could hear my whistle, even though the mike was canceling out virtually all other crowd noise. I plan to buy several more for my daughters, and for my son & sons-in-law to use while hunting. It didn't take a lot of effort to get a loud piercing whistle, and I could get a less shrill but very audible one with very little effort. I can blow a whistle a lot longer than I can yell... Fast delivery to boot!
